northward_sea_water_velocity_relative_to_sea_ice m s-1 [UVAA] The northward motion of sea water, relative to the northward drift of sea ice; calculated as northward_sea_water_velocity minus northward_sea_ice_velocity. A velocity is a vector quantity. "Northward" indicates a vector component which is positive when directed northward (negative southward). Sea ice velocity is defined as a two-dimensional vector, with no vertical component. "Sea ice" means all ice floating in the sea which has formed from freezing sea water, rather than by other processes such as calving of land ice to form icebergs.
